BBQ, grandma style

Missing woman’s daughter, grandson arrested on scene Tuesday, Oct 14 2008, 9:43 pm

Tehama County Sheriff’s Office detectives are piecing together evidence of a what appears to be a grizzly crime of elder abuse, embezzlement, conspiracy, and possibly even a homicide, that occurred just north of Corning.

The investigation began when the TCSO received a call from a man living in the Los Angeles area stating he was the son of Ramona Yolanda Allmond, 84, who lived at 5088 Edith Ave., north of Gallagher Avenue. Allmond’s son told the TSCO that he was concerned about his mother as he hadn’t heard from her since December 2007.

“Allmond’s son said he felt something was amiss,” said TSCO Captain Paul Hosler.

According to Hosler the son’s suspicions where further aroused when his sister Kathleen Theresa Allmond, 50, and her son Tony Ray, 30, both of whom live with the elderly woman, visited southern California without the elderly mother.

In response to the call TCSO deputies went on Saturday to the Edith Avenue residence to make a welfare check on Allmond.

When the deputies arrived they were unable to contact anyone at the home, but believed someone may have been hiding in an olive orchard behind the home.

A short time after the deputies left the Allmond residence, the concerned son once again called the TCSO to say his sister, Kathleen, was attempting to disguise her voice to sound like her mother, said the TCSO.

On Sunday the TCSO officers went back to the Edith Avenue residence where they contacted Kathleen Allmond and interviewed her at length, leading the officers to believe a very disturbing series of events had occurred involving the death of Ramona Allmond and the cremation of he remains behind her home, said Hosler.

Based on statements made by Kathleen Allmond and Ray, the TCSO believe that by unknown means Ramona Allmond died in her home in early December 2007 (the cause of death is under investigation).

Allmond and Ray allowed Ramona’s body to lie on the bedroom floor for a week and then moved the body to a cement culvert used for family barbeques behind the residence, said the TCSO.

“The suspects said the family had actually used the culvert to cook their Thanksgiving turkey several weeks before they put the body in it,” Hosler said.

Allmond and Ray then cremated Ramona’s body by burning in continuously using olive wood from the surrounding orchards for up to 17 hours, said TSCO.

“Kathleen allegedly made a necklace for herself with a portion of her mother’s skull, which she wore around her neck,” Hosler stated. “She posted a photograph of herself wearing the necklace on her MySpace page.”

During the ensuing months following Ramona’s death Allmond and Ray continued to cash the deceased monthly PERS retirement and social security checks, according to Hosler.

“We have corroborated that statement with evidence from checks cashed,” he said.

Allmond and Ray were arrested at the residence and booked into the Tehama County Jail on suspicion of felony embezzlement, elder abuse, and conspiracy. Bail on each was set at $30,000.

Hosler said as the investigation continues further evidence may lead to additional charges

On a lighter note, I have met these two people, and they're pretty scary.
